The Farmers
the Toohey family
Jim, Esther, Christian, Kellan, and Joanna Hope
We started Toohey & Sons in 2005, after moving from a tiny historic home in Boulder, Colorado to a 38-acre farm in Hygiene (between Longmont and Lyons). The farm had a 26-acre hay field and multiple small pastures, and we immediately began converting one of the pastures into an organic garden. Esther grew up on a farm in East Tennessee, and Christian raised a large family garden at our previous home; other than that, we were completely new to organic farming. Twenty years later, Toohey & Sons Organic is a thriving business that provides produce to customers throughout the Boulder Valley and the greater Denver metro area.
The Toohey Family in 2005
In addition to organic farming, our family has many other interests and pursuits. Jim is a pastor and architect, and Esther is a retired public school teacher who now offers academic enrichment classes to K–12 students. Besides managing the farming operation, Christian is also an architect with a Master’s degree from the University of Colorado Denver. Kellan earned a doctoral degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Colorado Boulder, and performs with numerous regional orchestras while also maintaining a full private teaching studio. Joanna Hope has a double Bachelor’s degree in History and Flute Performance from CU Boulder, and is now working on a doctoral degree in Early Modern European History.
